So, in the past I’ve promised a writeup about my color process…which I still plan on posting when I get some more free time! Since I don’t have any teaching lined up yet, maybe I’ll post some instructables on here instead!
But, since I’ve gotten some more color questions recently, I’ll just try…

Hello internet. As you might know I have a modest merdreton of followers (like Jesus). To use the frankly unrealistic number for good, here are some of my favorite lesserknown or underappreciated artists on & off tumblr. I didn’t bother mentioning those already endowed with fame and/or fortune (Jesus wouldn’t either) and probably forgot a lot of great artists, but it’s a start:
I discovered Antoine Cosse through Richard Short’s twitter (Richard is the author of Klaus which you should own as a book and read online, it’s my favorite ongoing comic strip). Lovely writing & pacing, striking minimalist compositions and great use of grayscale.
Vincent Giard is infinitely inventive and amusing. Also, Vincent, if you’re reading this, can you answer my email about the car thing?
Italy! Sarah Mazzetti’s work has been evolving wildly lately, her lines and color flow perfectly between precision and detachment. Just look at this cat! Together with Giulia Sagramola (who’s a wonderful illustrator too, I think we both had our first New Yorker spots in the same issue, also she’s now on tumblr) & Christina Spano they publish darling little books under Teiera. You can buy them here. Nicolò Pellizzon is another talented member of their Italian gang, he recently published his first graphic novel.
Disa Wallander has a sophisticated style and a great sense of humor. What more can you possibly want? (please don’t send me answers)
Tim Hensley’s Wally Gropius is the Great American Graphic Novel and he’s also on twitter now. Tim is a genius and all his output deserves cherishing and re-reading. Even his tweets are brilliant.
Nadine Redlich and Thomas Wellman are charming and hilarious, really hope they get to publish books in English in some near future.
Zosia Dzierzawska is a great (self-taught!) illustrator. And she did an adaptation of D.Kharms.
Olesya Shchukina and Evgenia Barinova are my excellent ЦЕХ compatriots. Also Taya & Nulifer, both students of the great V.Melamed. Olya Leontieva is brilliant too, look at these birds.
Baldur Helgason has been making great portraits of artists & musicians, including dear old M.E.S.
Sepoe Nabi is an illustrator/musician (collaborated with Niv Bavarsky) from Norway, his work has a dreamy feel that I very much appreciate.
Finally, Quentin Duckit sez fuckit.
And here are some talented people you probably definitely already know, but I’ll list them just in case:
Mari Kanstad Johnsen, Renart, James Hatley, Lilly Carré, airfortress, Irkus M Zeberio, Eleni Kalorkoti, Ping Zhu, Dadu Shin, Peter Oumanski, Heather Danforth, Chuck Groenink, Charmaine Verhagen, Kris Mukai, Sophia Foster-Dimino, Hannah K.Lee, Jesse Balmer, Michael Olivo, Alison Dubois, Yoko Tanji, Matthew Houston, adactivity.
Hey guys! 3 things:
First, thank you for all the support & good vibes on here! I really appreciate it, and I hope you’re all having a lovely day, respectively.Second, I wanted to post my cover illo/design for an upcoming issue of Domestic Etch magazine! The theme was “The Past”, and of course I wanted to draw a medieval alternate reality! It was a while back, but I’m very happy to report that my cover was featured in the Society of Illustrators editorial show this year (along with this piece, and this one!)
Third, I updated my print store with a bunch of new pieces, including my Domestic Etch cover (minus the type), the rest of the images you see here, and more! Inprnt has seriously amazing print quality—the colors SUPER ACCURATE—so check ‘em out if you need to fill some wall space with lady space marines or floating donuts!
